Doctor Susan Dimock was born this day in 1847 in Washington, North Carolina. Rejected to study at Harvard Medical College, Doctor Dimock looked to Europe- and was accepted and studied at the University of Zurick- she graduated with high honors in 1871 and that same year her thesis was published. She continued with clinical studies in Vienna and Paris.
After returning to the United States and applying to the North Carolina Medical Society, she rejected their offer of honorary membership. Doctor Dimock accepted the appointment as resident physician at New England Hospital for Women and Children in 1871.
As surgeon and physician Doctor Dimock made great improvements in the medical treatment of women and children. She also created the first graded school of nursing.
Sadly, Susan Dimock drowned with 335 other passengers when the S.S. Shiller hit a ridge off of the coast of the Scilly Isles while crossing the Atlantic. She was only 28 years old.
