
In 1848, Samual Gregory formed, "The Female Medical Educational Society" in Boston,Mass. Mr Gregory felt that women should have access to female doctors. This is the same year, Sececa Falls hosted the first Women's Right Convention. Mr. Gregory went on to publish the book; "Letters to Ladies in Favor of Female Physicians for their own Sex" published 1850. The second edition was in 2009.
About 100 years later in 1942, Captain Dorothy C. Stratton, was authorized to form Coast Guard Woman's Auxiliary, SPARS which stands for "Semper Paratur, Always Ready".
Like the WAVES, this freed more men to fight overseas during WWII.
