Women, this blog is a celebration of our collective history through the ages and throughout the world. Amazing stories that have been buried in dusty corners away from the light. Help us to shed light on all these amazing stories. Read our blog and then visit us at the Women's Mercury to learn about our ongoing projects.

June 16th

On this day in 2011, an Ames, Iowa Girl Scout Troop, who call themselves the Flying Monkeys, are receiving their award at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in Alexandria, Va. They are the winners of inaugural FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) Global Innovation Award, presented by the X PRIZE Foundation. They were given a 20,000 dollar check to help with patent of this amazing invention.
Which they call BOB-I ," a prosthetic hand device that helps users with limb abnormalities hold, grip, stabilize or secure items" The first BOB-I was for a three year girl,Daniella of Georgia, who was born without fingers on her right hand.
The Flying Monkeys heard about Daniella and wanted to help her to hold and use a pencil. And the BOB-I works! There are many links on web to view the great success of their invention!
The Flying Monkeys are among over 200 Girl Scout robotics teams that have been formed around the country as part of Girl Scouts of the USA’s increasing focus on science, technology, engineering and math. “Girl Scouts are showing the world that girls are ready to take their place as scientific leaders,” says Kate Pickle, GSUSA’s National Program Manager, STEM.
